ZambiaOM InternationalEnglish/EspañolFlashflood and Landslide on Lake Tanganyika's Shore - AFRICA In Tongwa, a village where three OM workers are living, a flash flood swept through the village, damaging the clinic and school, and collapsing several homes. Thankfully no one was killed. However, in Kalala, a nearby village, eight people were killed by a landslide that crushed all the homes in its path. The flash floods happened early in the morning before sunrise. The people were terrified. Many lost their possessions, food and cash, which is a problem since there are no banks, in the flood. The stream is the only source of drinking water for the village and even though the water is now brown with mud, the people have nothing else to drink. Also, due to the damage, there is now only one meter of ground between the school and the drop off into the stream and the walls and floor of the school are cracked. The people in Tongwa are afraid to sleep inside their houses for fear that they will collapse if it rains again. The school is closed, and the fishermen are also afraid to go out and fish, which is their only source of income. They suspect there is witchcraft behind the flood. The government promised tents and food to those who had lost their homes, but as yet nothing has been provided. Please pray for peace and unity among the people in the villages and for wisdom for those in leadership making decisions. INUNDACIONES Y ALUDES EN LA COSTA DEL LAGO TANGANYIKA - África Temprano en la mañana del 21 de Febrero dos aldeas en las costas del Lago Tanganyika fueron desbastadas por aludes e inundaciones. OM África tiene equipos trabajando en aldeas remotas a lo largo de la costa del Lago Tanganyika. En Tongwa, una aldea en la que están viviendo tres obreros de OM, fue barrida por una inundación, que provocó daños en la clínica y la escuela, a la vez que derrumbó muchas casas. Afortunadamente no hubo víctimas fatales. Sin embargo, en Kalala, una aldea cercana, ocho personas murieron por los aludes que destruyeron todas las casas en su camino. Las inundaciones llegaron al amanecer. La gente estaba aterrada. Muchos perdieron sus posesiones, comida y dinero, lo cual es un problema porque no hay bancos por la inundación. Un arroyo es la única fuente de agua potable para la aldea, pero ahora está mezclada con barro, no hay nada más para beber. También, debido al paso de la creciente, ahora sólo hay un metro de separación entre la escuela y el profundo lecho del río. Las paredes y el techo de la escuela tienen grietas. Los ciudadanos de Tongwa temen dormir dentro de sus casas porque piensan que si llueve otra vez, se pueden derrumbar con ellos adentro. La escuela está cerrada y los pescadores también temen salir al mar. La pesca es su único recurso económico. Ellos creen que hay trabajos de brujería detrás de las inundaciones. El gobierno ha prometido tiendas y comida para los que han perdido sus casas, pero hasta el momento no se les ha provisto nada.
